Are All Elves Vegetarian?

"The most we will say about all elves is that all elves must make up
their own minds on this and nearly every other subject."

We have addressed this question in a number of our books but since among elfin online groups this is the most hotly debated and often, therefore, the most avoided and controversial topic, we think it bears speaking of again.
The simple answer, like so many things concerning elves, and as Tolkien pointed out so cleverly, is both yes and no. Some elves are vegetarian and some are not. These elves are mostly vegetarian, which means we don’t usually eat meat, and almost never among ours’elves, but we do eat meat in limited quantities with others sometimes. It should be remembered that these elves were first awakened to our elven natures by the Elf Queen’s Daughters (EQD) in the mid 70s and manifested as a vortex of the sisterhood as the Elves of the Southern Woodlands. Thus our own magical training and development was greatly influenced by our sisters in the EQD.
The sisters of the EQD used to say that the Law of Communion was higher than the Law of Dietary Restriction. This means that while we are essentially vegetarian, if someone offers us meat for dinner when we are their guests, we accept it. It would be rude not to do so and go against the all important uniting principle of community. On the other hand, we are rather liberal concerning others if they are our guests. If they desire meat when visiting us, we will fix it for them, although we are unlikely to imbibe ours’elves under such circumstances.
We choose to be vegetarian ours’elves because we seek to contribute as little unnecessary violence upon innocence animals as we can in the world. The world is already awash with violence and it really doesn’t need more. But we are not the sort of people to enforce our beliefs upon others, or to say that all elves must be vegetarian. The most we will say about all elves is that all elves must make up their own minds on this and nearly every other subject.
We have known elves who have told us that they had to eat meat because their bodies required it, due to their blood type or whatever, or that they would die if they didn’t consume meat. We really don’t care if it is true or not as we accept their own wishes for their choice of diet. As far as we are concerned, they could just say they like eating meat, or like the taste and smell of bacon (so do we, although we almost never eat it) and that would be okay with us. It is their decision and we are satisfied with leaving them to their own path and course of spiritual development and make no judgments about them for doing so. Elfin is enormous and there is surely room for all of us, although in our part of Elfin everything is magical and sacred and thus killing animals to eat just wouldn’t seem right to us (not to mention the deer are far too swift to catch even with an arrow in Elfin). But we are each creating our own realms and others must do as their own hearts, imaginations and consciences dictate.

We have published an elven cookbook and while most of the recipes are vegetarian, we included a couple of recipes that offer an option for adding meat or fish, especially for our meat eating otherkin. And if you are interested in trying some of our vegetarian dishes, The Elf Folks' Book of Cookery: Recipes For a Delighted Tongue, a Healthy Body and a Magical Life includes over 50 of our original dishes for all manner of faerie-elven folk like: Caravan Elves Potato and Mushroom Delight,  Elven Minestrone Soup, Mermaid Navy Bean & Pine Nut Burgers, Wild Pixies Wild Rice Stuffed Peppers, and Dwarves Veggie Chili Soup.
