What is the Reaction of The Silver Elves to Fictionkin? And Why do Various Otherkin Use the Suffix -kin to Describe their Kintype?

"Fictionkin is defined as being an otherkin who sees themselves either to be a reincarnation or parallel incarnation of a fictional character. This is quite the way we Silver Elves see them as well.    . . . we are not always as powerful or as skilled as the individual character to whom we feel related. However, it is important to understand that in relating to such characters, we are not only attempting to communicate who we are inwardly, who we feel ours’elves to be, but we are also communicating our imaginal aspects of our s’elves, which means whom we strive to be and become."

What is our Silver Elves Reaction to Fictionkin?

Fictionkin is defined as being an otherkin who sees themselves either to be a reincarnation or parallel incarnation of a fictional character. This is quite the way we Silver Elves see them as well. Fictionkin have seen a show or read a story or played a video game and get a sense that they are like one of the characters. Perhaps, even say to thems’elves, that’s me! We have certainly done this when reading a story, in fact many times. It is a resonant connection to a character in a story. It feels as though the author somehow knew you and was actually writing about you only, perhaps, giving you another name as people sometimes do so they won’t get sued. Only, in this case, the characters one feels kin to are usually amazing beings to which one feels an incredible closeness and a deep sense of connection and an eagerness to be. It just feels right.

Of course, we are not always as powerful or as skilled as the individual character to whom we feel related. However, it is important to understand that in relating to such characters, we are not only attempting to communicate who we are inwardly, who we feel ours’elves to be, but we are also communicating our imaginal aspects of our s’elves, which means whom we strive to be and become. We, in a sense, are speaking of what we feel to be our destiny as soulful spirits.

That really is true of nearly all of us elfae and otherkin folk. We may not have the beauty, in worldly appearance, or even the elf ears that fiction proclaims we have or even the magical power of enchantment that elfin folk are seen as having but that is something that is growing in us. It is what we are developing toward (see our book Faerie, Fae, and Otherkin Tribes). We may not be great archers and marksman, as say Legolas or other wood elves are seen as being, but that doesn’t mean we can’t shoot a bow and increase our skills, through practice, by doing so and in doing so become great. The same is true of our powers of enchantment. We may not be as great as a particular character to whom we relate, but that doesn’t mean we have no powers at all.

This same sort of association can also be seen with those who see thems’elves in historical characters and say that they are the reincarnation of Napoleon or Cleopartra or some other noted historical figure. This doesn’t mean that one was actually Napoleon in a past life, although someone was, but rather that one was someone quite like Napoleon who, for whatever reasons, didn’t quite make it into the history books. Obviously, a dozen or more people couldn’t have been Napoleon in a former lifetime, but there are many people whose past lives bear a similarity to Napoleon’s.

The same is true of the multitude of individuals we’ve met who proclaim or sometimes just strongly hint that they were and are Jesus (see our book Jesus Christ Elf Lord: The Faerie Foundations of Christianity, Book One and also see newly published Book Two). They are unlikely to have actually been Jesus but what they are really saying is I’m like Jesus. If you wish to understand me, think of me as Jesus, for we are very much the same. Whether they can actually live up to such declarations is, again, questionable. But from an elvish point of view that is not the point at all. The point is that Jesus is the model for their manifestation of their own unique Jesus-ness. They are, we hope, living in the spirit of Jesus, and thus becoming in that way more divine. They will never be Jesus. Only Jesus will ever be Jesus. However, they may become someone quite similar and unique as their own spiritual manifestation. And with these simultaneous multiple instances of Jesus in fiction kin, Jesus thus becomes a sort of defined archetype that others may use as a guide to their own evolution.

Of course, being elves and part of the otherkin and magical community, we are more likely to encounter various versions of Galadriel, Legolas, Elrond and so forth instead of Jesus, not that we don’t still run into Jesus from time to time, but also Merlin, lots of Merlins, Gandalf and King Arthur now and again, also.

Merlin and King Arthur are what we might call semi-historic characters both fictional and possibly based upon a real individual or several real individuals (see Nicolai Tolstoy The Quest for Merlin). And that is what we often see with fictionkin. There is a sense they have that fictional characters are based, in part, on real individuals whose lives and beings the author used as a model for his character. And, in a magical sense, that real character is their own s’elf.

Of course, fictionkin are actually going the other way around. They are taking fictional characters, who may or may not be based upon real individuals, and reverse engineering them into actual characters, which is to say thems’elves, that they bring to life through their lives in the world. Which is a form of magic. And really, that is what all of us elfae and otherkin folk are doing. We are making our visions real by being the elves and others we inwardly know ours’elves to truly be (see our book The Elven Way: The Magical Path of the Shining Ones).

Why do Various Otherkin Use the Suffix -kin to Describe their Kintype?

"The fact that some otherkin add -kin to their type is a declaration of kinship, saying I am one of you, but of a particular type, and being elfae individuals, certainly of an individual variety of that type as well. . . And if you mean you are otherkin of whatever sort, we are glad to have you with us."

One might wonder why so many otherkin, in describing thems’elves, add the suffix -kin to their ‘kin type’. They will say that they are demonkin or vampirekin, or wolfkin or some other type of kin instead of simply saying, I’m a vampire or wolf or whatever. It is a somewhat curious phenomenon and like all things that pique our curiosity, it drew us to contemplate the reasons why. Not that our conclusions will be necessarily accurate or encompass every way of looking at the idea but, still, this is our own reaction to the fact that so many do this.

First, it is probably just custom. Someone did it first and others liked it upon hearing it and followed their example. Not blindly, but out of attraction. That, in a way, does differentiate we elfae folk from the normal folk (who may actually be primarily huldu folk, or hidden fae). We follow the example of others because we like whatever it is that they have done or worn or whatever and we adapt it to our own style and flair. The normal folk ever seek to conform in order to disappear in the mass so they can do whatever it is they are up to in secret and unseen. They are like spies in that way and criminals as well. They ever seek to blend in so they won’t be recognized and spotted. Whereas, we other elfae are out here waving our eccentricities around like a flag. We Silver Elves are ‘out’, so to speak, while they are still very much and quite determinedly in the closet, or behind closed doors, doing … god knows what, which is the whole point for them. They wish to blend into the herd. They feel it’s safer that way.

We get the sense that when someone adds -kin to their kintype, they are, in fact, announcing quite strongly their association with we of the elfae community, which is also the otherkin community. They are not only saying, I am a vampire. They are also proclaiming that as a vampire they are one of us of the Faerie worlds. A man or woman might also become a vampire and, in doing so, be transformed into an otherworldly being but may not necessarily see thems’elves as a part of our world. Although, we would still see them as being so, even if they are vampires who function in a predatory way. But it is quite possible that they are ‘normal’ vampires, by which we mean that they wish to merge among the normal folk, as the normal folk seek to blend together as one amorphous mass, and disappear among them. Which is much more likely for predatory vampires than those who are symbiotic in the acquisition of energy needs.

The fact that some otherkin add -kin to their type is a declaration of kinship, saying I am one of you, but of a particular type, and being elfae individuals, certainly of an individual variety of that type as well. Demonkin and vampirekin, etc. means I am an otherkin that is of the vampire or demon type and lineage.

It is, of course, utterly unnecessary for individuals to add -kin to their type. They can simply say I’m a vampire or demon or werewolf or whatever and that would certainly be okay with us Silver Elves and we expect most elfae sorts. We understand that in relating to us at all you are part of the other-world, the Faerie dimensions. But then, we have a rather expansive understanding of what is considered fae. We see elves, faeries, pixies, brownies and all sorts of fae in the world around us. But saying one is -kin is, well, very familial and rather nice really. Yes, you are our kin and we are happy to have you among us, dear ones, whomever you may be as long as you come in love and harmony.

Of course, in some cases, such as Fictionkin, that designation is quite necessary. One wouldn’t say, for instance, I’m Fiction. That just wouldn’t work as an identity. Or at least as a communication of one’s identity. In that case, adding -kin is important. It lets others know what you mean, whereas I’m Fiction, would just elicit a sort of ‘what?’ from most of us if we didn’t know that the individual meant that they are of our kindred.

Of course, it is possible that someone would use the term -kin in the way that the term elf- friend is used to mean I am a friend of elves but not an elf. Thus, someone could be saying, I’m kin to vampires but not a vampire or demon or whatever. But we have never encountered anyone that seemed to be using that suffix in that way.

In the long run, it is really about clear communication. Using -kin or not, is about others understanding what you mean. And if you mean you are otherkin of whatever sort, we are glad to have you with us.
