Who came First, Elves or Faeries?

 "....not to say that elves came before faeries or faeries before elves,
but that the modern conception of elves is much more ancient than
the notion that is currently popular concerning faerie folk."

      This question is a little bit like the chicken or the egg dilemma. However, most people these days conceive of faeries as being small humanoid beings with the wings of butterflies, dragonflies or moths for the most part and this conception of faeries comes primarily from Victorian times (see The Dragon Legacy by Nicolas De Vere and Realm of the Ring Lords by Laurence Gardner). (Also note that we are not saying that there are no winged-beings of any kind, including the Deva Realm, but that the idea of faeries as tiny creatures is not an ancient concept.) This notion of tiny humanoid winged faeries is a very recent one. In that sense, elves did very much come first. And this is so at least as far as the fact that the general conception of elves, which these days is mostly derived from Tolkien, is closer to the traditional understanding of the Elven and Faerie folk, the combination of which these elves refer to as elfin or elfae. This is not to say that elves came before faeries or faeries before elves, but that the modern conception of elves is much more ancient than the notion that is currently popular concerning faerie folk.

     The truth is that elves, faeries, pixies, brownies, the Sidhe and various other forms of faerie elfin folk are all merely various tribal formations, bands and groups of one essential people. Asking if the elves or faeries came first is like asking if First Nation tribes of the Sioux or the Cheyenne came first. Or the Apaches or the Navajos came first. We are all related peoples.

     It is interesting to us, however, that the conception of faeries as winged little humans is so popular. This is truly a relatively recent innovation on faerie lore, created according to some folks to diminish the significance of our peoples, and it has little support in ancient lore except in the fact that the dwarves are often conceived of as being short of stature. Still, this idea has taken root in the minds and hearts of many folk so strongly that there are those who speak with these tiny winged ethereal beings. Which means, in effect, that this thought form is so powerful that such beings have actually been created on the astral and etheric realms of being, with some manifestation, mostly in an etheric fashion, according to these seers, on the material plane.

     For our own part, these elves see the butterflies, dragonflies and moths as being these faeries. We don’t demand that they be anthropomorphized beings, giving them human bodies in order to see them as people but accept them for the unique faeries beings that they truly are. We also embrace many trees as being elfin in nature and many birds as well.

     Now, we don’t have a problem with those who envision faeries as little, tiny winged human beings, except for the fact that these are often the folks who insist on faeries being in that form and deny our existence as living and manifest elves. And they often also fail to see or relate to modern manifest faerie folk who often wear various forms of faerie wings or elf ears in order to feel more truly our own s’elves as well as announce to the world our own unique faerie natures.

We would remind these folks that the idea of faeries as small, winged humanoids is a fairly modern idea and that the idea that the elves and faerie folk exist as manifest human beings interacting with mankind and others is nearly as ancient as the elfin ours’elves are. But being tolerant folk, we are perfectly happy with their conception of the fae as long as they don’t deny our own true existence. (See our books the Elven Way and Liber Aelph).

Are Elves "Indigos?"

 "We are the Children of the Age that is Dawning and the Age that is yet to come.
And we are the Children of Magical Ages that have passed long ago."

     We can’t speak for all elves, but we expect that most elves feel a certain kinship with the description of Indigo Children. In fact, most of us were Indigo Children before anyone came up with that term. We also usually relate to being called Star Children, Space Gypsies, and even Freaks when used in a positive fashion. We are the Children of the Earth and Stars, the Moonlight, the Sun light, the radiant trees of Elfin, the Sea Shine and nearly any description of people who are magical in a positive way and surely the unusual and eccentric tends to appeal to us. We are the Ancient Folk, the Wyrd Folk, the glimpsed out of the corner of your eye people.

     We are also quite okay with the idea that we are pixies, fae, brownies, Sidhe and various other otherkin descriptions. Although, Therians as a type of otherkin often see themselves as being different than elves, some of us elven, because of our shapeshifting abilities and our talent for inhabiting animal bodies in our shamanic trance magic, as well as having totem animals, are not beyond thinking of ours’elves as being elves, Aelfar, and Therians as well.

     That’s the thing about we elven. We tend to be very flexible and adaptable and easily relate to any others that we like and are quite adept at seeing ours’elves in others and perceiving the link and connection between us. You could call us Friends, for we surely are to all those who sincerely wish to be friendly, and that would do as well.

     We are the Children of the Age that is Dawning and the Age that is yet to come. And we are the Children of Magical Ages that have passed long ago (see our book Liber Aelph: Words of Guidance from the Silver Elves to Our Magical Children). Ever and always we are the twinkle in your mother’s eye and the sparkle of your father’s smile. We are the spark that ignites when soul mates meet for the first time. We are the laughter of children heard in the distance. The melody that comes from some unseen source in the forest. We are your own true s’elves calling out to you and it really doesn’t matter by what name you call us. It only matters that you know that you are loved and guided and we will greet you when you step into Elfin with our arms wide and a smile upon our faces.

     And it doesn’t really matter what you call us, beloved, as long as you are calling us with love.

Is There Anything That All Elves Have In Common?

      The thing that elves have in common is our love of all things elven. Beyond that, and a propensity to do and be interested in magic in various forms, particularly in enchantment, which is the chief magic of the elves, what we have most in common is that we are nearly all of us eccentrics in some way. Thus what we have in common is our differences.

     This can be somewhat frustrating for those who are eager to define us in more precise ways and particularly frustrating for those newly awakened elven who wish to have some sort of guideline to base their elven nature upon. But really, what they need to base their exploration into Elfin most upon is their own s’elves, their own love of Elfin and their individual nature without projecting that nature necessarily upon every other elf.

     It is understandable, of course, that those who feel a kinship to elves and Elfin wish some guidance in the quest of their true natures, particular since the world is ever trying to tell them to be something else, something acceptable to the masses and the masters. But, alas, all we can really tell them is to be true to their s’elves, to be tolerant of others, and most of all to be the best elves they can be as best they are able to understand it their own s’elves and thus to be ever ready to change and evolve, to adapt and develop their s’elves in this never ending quest toward ‘elf realization.

     A lot of awakening elves get their ideas of the nature of the Elven from Tolkien and surely he is a good source for while he didn’t understand us entirely, he did give us some very advanced and wise models of elfin being. Not perfect beings, surely, but often advanced spiritual beings whose nature is a good thing to aspire toward.

     And numerous folks attain their ideas of elvishness from the ancient lore, either directly or through modern works of fiction based upon these works. Always, they will be drawn to what appeals to their own natures and this is natural and, in its way, wise as long as one doesn’t assume, as unfortunately some do, that the way they understand elves to be is the way all elves are or must be. That will never work out because elves are not only incredibly diverse but also ever diversifying. As our numbers grow, as more and more individuals awaken to their elven natures, the more myriad shall our people be. But if we don’t exercise and promote mutual tolerance of all save that which is intolerant, then we have surely lost our way and will wander out of Elfin and back into that world that is so eager to judge everyone by its own standards and seeks to pressure each and everyone to conform.

     We are elves and although we honor our ancestors, we are not bound by the past. And while we find much in the world amazing and the works of modern writers who speak of us sometimes fascinating, we are ever creating our own styles. We are neither parrots nor cuckoo birds. We are the flocks of Elfin and we each have our own song that we sing in harmony together.

Do Elves Sweat?

   "... elves for the most part are rather more composed as beings
than many other folks. We don’t sweat the small stuff!"

 An elven sister wrote to us the other day that sHe heard that some people have put forth the idea that elves don’t sweat. We suspect that they believe too that we don’t have some other important bodily functions that are essential to being in a human body. Alas, being able to sweat is a vital part of a healthy body, thus the idea that we don’t sweat is rather counter to the idea that these same people also seem to hold that we elves are healthier than most other folks. If we are truly healthier than others, we’d probably sweat more than they do, not less.

     However, if we remove this idea of not sweating from its essential materialistic view of elfinness and extend it, as we think nearly everything about elven nature should be extended, to a more spiritual, energetic point of view, then we could say and we’d quite agree that elves for the most part are rather more composed as beings than many other folks. We don’t sweat the small stuff! We don’t tend to get frazzled easily as so many others we’ve encountered around us do over every little thing and this may in part be due to the fact that we view life and development from the point of view of the stars. This is to say that we understand that most of what goes on in a particular life is transitory and that we have lifetimes yet to go upon our journey as well as having been on this Quest to manifest Elfin upon the Earth (and surely other planets and dimensions) for many lifetimes already.

     So if that is what they mean in proclaiming that elves sweat less, we guess we’d have to agree with them.

Elven Blessings, Dear Kindred!

Are Elves Hyper-sexual?

 

 “We have come to take our bodies to give our spirits birth.”

 If anything, we elves may be hyper-sensual. We are very in touch with the sensual, feeling aspects of the world in all its various forms. Thus we tend to be more intuitive than many others, not because they are incapable of being intuitive but because they so often discount their intuitive feelings. What they tend to promote instead is what they call their gut feelings, but more often than not, this has little to do with their true gut feelings and everything to do with their inculcated prejudices and what they call feelings are really mind dominated emotions.

     This is not to say that we are not sexual beings. But then most of humanity and in life in general are sexual beings. What differentiates elves from many others is not our interest in sexuality but our lack of shame in being sexual and our rather open attitude toward sex and nudity. Unlike many other folks, we don’t pretend that we are not interested in sex as they often do, for this pretense of lack of interest leads to perverse desires and behaviors all carried on in secret. This is the case with so many evangelist and politicians and other public figures who pretend they are happily married individuals who never have sex outside of their marriage who then have affairs, consort with prostitutes and have homosexual relationship while pretending to condemn homosexuality. Elves who are homosexual are seldom hiding in the closet, unless their lives depend upon it, they are out there for all to see. This is not to say that all elves are homosexual, surely we are not, or that all elves are hyper-sexual, but that elves are ever free to be what they truly are, and pursue their own interests and desires with mature and consenting others.

As elves in striving to be more enlightened as beings, we are seeking not simply to be more conscious, but more sentient in our consciousness, more feeling aware, more in touch on a feeling level with the all of life. This is, in part, why we have such a compassionate feeling for the trees, the whales and the all of life. We are in the now, alive and feeling, bring our spirit into matter. The stories in Elven Silver were originally written to go along with the Elven Tree of Life to explore your magical being in our Elven Tree of Life Eternal. In the Elven Tree of Life Eternal, there are different types of elves and faeries that you can come out to be and the bottom has choices of what kind of magic you wield. So these stories in Elven Silver were originally written to go with those. But then we realized that it would be far too much to read on a website, so we made the stories into a book. We have also made the Elven Tree of Life into a book titled The Elven Tree of Life Eternal: A Magical Quest for One's True S'Elf, much like a choose your own adventure book, to use to explore your magical nature.
