The world looks rather the same but we and the change that has occurred within us has made it different and new. We see it in a new light, the radiant light of Elfin and Faerie. "
Images of stones and rocks as portals to other realms, to Faerie, to Elfin and related lands, or to the etheric, ethereal, esoteric and eldritch lands is a common theme. Stonehenge is surely a prime example. But this is also true of nearly all dolmens, menhirs, cairns, megaliths, large hag stones, standing stones, orthostats, and liths, cromlechs, etc. These portals also includes another group: caves, caverns and barrow downs, although these have a slightly different but still connected symbology.
Many of the first type rock formation portals (the dolmens, menhirs, etc.) are phallic in nature indicating a connection between the Earth and the Stars, although dolmens are more feminine in form and may represent the place where the moonlight and starlight enters the Earth. Thus, dolmens are more likely to be used to represent the entry way to other realms, whereas the other more phallic rocks denote our aspiration toward the stars and thus the more subtle aethers where the Shining Ones abide.
Barrows, caves and caverns have that same sort of energy. Although, they are usually associated with death, the passage from one life to another, or from this life to a different world. This is both because they are beneath the ground where people are often buried, but also because they are womb-like formations representing rebirth.
Hag stones, stones that have natural formed holes in the middle through which it is said one can see Faerie or the other worldly realms, when they are large enough would also represent an entry point into eldritch regions. These are similar to dolmens, except dolmens are usually put together by human hands, while hag stones are formed by Nature which lends them additional power and potency. In that way, dolmens may represent our efforts to build a bridge to Faerie, we might say, while hag stones indicates natural passage ways into Faerie created by Nature for us.
We might note that the mounds the ancients built for the kings, queens or other important leaders to be buried in are along the same lines as barrows and caves, and the pyramids, both Egyptian, East Asian and Meso-American are of this same order. Temples and churches, mosques and other places deemed holy by the followers of various faiths are really along the same lines. Only in those cases, one enters in to commune with the deity, who dwells there, coming for a visit as it were, and then going home again. Rather like visiting your ancient, rich and powerful grandparents.
But the question here really, is why rocks and stones? Even churches, especially old ones are made of rock and stone. Is there something special about stones that makes them vibrant passageways to other worlds? And we Silver Elves would have to say, not really.
It is not that stones don’t have powers and potency. In our elvish animistic point of view, much like a child’s view of life up to puberty (see The Uses of Enchantment by Bruno Betterheim), everything is alive with spirit. And the hordes of individuals who utilize various gems and minerals and frequently collect them like dragons have hoards, or book readers have libraries with shelves and boxes of books and not a place to put them all, understand the opportunity and potential power that connection with the mineral world brings us.
But, while various stones can be both useful esoterically and physically beautiful and enchanting, there is nothing about stones that make them per se a better medium for entering the Faerie realms than some others that are available to us. It is not the stone itself that bears the power of passage, although we say again natural formations seem to offer more possibility than manmade ones. It is the form that is important. It is the suggestion of thresholds and passageways that really empowers the stones in its use as a means of stepping from one parallel realm to another. Like qigong it is not just the movements but the movements in coordination with our imaginal powers.
Such passageways to Faerie can also be found traditionally in the Mists. Faerie lore also tells us that Twilight provides an opening for us. Halloween or Samhain as the time of year also helps make that connection, as does the fall overall or the period in and around to midnight or the witching hour. So if you really wish to enter Faerie, find a hag stone or dolmen and pass through it in a mist at twilight or around midnight on Samhain or close to it.

We know that there are many kindred who would like to leave this world entirely, right now, but that will happen in due course. We will enter the barrow and reemerge anew looking completely different. There is no hurry to get to Elfin and Faerie and to go before it is one’s time is to ignorantly tamper with one’s own fate and destiny and that almost never turns out well. It’s like wandering into a kitchen where something is cooking on the stove and simply grabbing miscellaneous spices and vegetables and randomly throwing them into the pot without actually even taking a look to see what is brewing.
Besides, beloved, our geas is here. The mission we have accepted voluntarily, and thus our duty, stems from that decision to manifest Elfin upon the Earth and among the Stars and though it doesn’t seem like Elfin can come quick enough, we wish to do this right, don’t we? Otherwise, it will all fall apart again, as it has before, and we wouldn’t wish that would we? We want our Elfin to last longer than the pyramids, and stand before the stars for ages yet to come greeting all our kindred as they return to us upon the Earth in the paradise we have created together.
