Do We Elves Recognize Each Other When We First Meet, Even If We're Total Strangers?

". . . When you are elfae, your being hums with the Song of Faerie as it plays through your spirit. In some ways, we are like little broadcasting posts of Elvishness. We magnify and pass on the vibrations of Faerie and sing along with them in our very souls. When we come near other elfin beings, we begin to resonate together. It is just that we elfae are like solar batteries that light up when we encounter each other and in lighting up charge each other’s batteries, rather like a perpetual motion device. Look true, dear kin, and you will surely see beneath the veil of the normal world to the truth of magic and enchantment that hides within it."

Well, it really would be too much to speak for all elves and elfae folk, for there are ever varieties, variations and myriad types of elfae among us. And yet, yes, we feel we are safe in saying that as a general ‘rule’, not rule really but as a generalized fact, that we elfae folk do have an instinctive sense of our others when we first encounter each other, even if we have never meet before.

Of course, this sense is a very wide one and not always and, in fact, we think, not usually very specific. Therefore upon first meeting, while we have a sense that someone is ‘other,’ as we certainly are, something quite apart from normal society even when they are fitting rather seamlessly into it, we don’t usually know exactly what sort of elfae they may be.

We have observed that there is a tendency among those who are young or new to our community frequently to jump to the conclusion that whatever they are as a kin, the other person with whom they experience this sense of recognition must also be. Especially, if they find the other romantically, shall we say, attractive. And we, when we were quite young, relatively, and newly awakened, did the same thing. However, we learned in time from experience that while we were correct that the person was ‘other’ of some sort, our notion of what sort of other they might be was not always accurate. Of course, we were not always wrong either.

Therefore, as a general rule, sorry, policy, we don’t tell people what we think they are except as a means of getting them to reveal thems’elves to us. Usually, we tell them what we are … ‘we’re elves’ and wait to see if they reply in a positive way by saying, ‘so am I’ or ‘I’m a faerie’ or whatever.

Sometimes, however, if we see a person who seems like a leprechaun, we might say, as though we are joking, ‘you look like a leprechaun’, but leprechauns almost never admit to being leprechauns. Usually, the most you get out of them will be ‘people have told me that before’ or something of that nature.

And occasionally, we come upon brownies who are very clearly brownies and we might tell them that is how we see them, but their own response, whatever it may be, is sacrosanct. If we said, ‘you look like a brownie to us,’ and they reply, ‘no, I’m a faerie’ that’s it. We except that they are really a faerie, or elf or whatever they declare. And anyway, we were just putting our impression of them out there in order to draw a response from them so we could see if they were one of us and what sort of us that they might be since we experienced that sense of other recognition when we encountered them.

But while we might mistake the type of elfae a person is, we’ve never been wrong, as far as we can remember, about our impression that they were elfae of some sort. Although, that is possible too, of course. And yet, due to the fact that so many of our kindred haven’t yet awakened and some dare not reveal thems’elves at all because of a deep inner paranoia born of ages of persecution, it is always possible that they are actually an ‘other’ of some sort, but just don’t know it as yet, or dare not say so. Still, we will not push it. If they are not ready, we understand. Natural awakenings, like natural births, are highly recommended. If they don’t feel strongly or, at least, clearly that they are other, they have no real business in Elfin and Faerie anyway. It would just be too confusing for them.

At the same time, we should probably admit that we have a very liberal view of what constitutes being ‘other’. We see the fae in nearly everyone who has even a little bit of elfae in them. Not that everyone does, mind you. Many do not and others have it buried so deeply that they no longer hum or resonate with Faerie energy at all.

For that is the thing, really. Look true, dear kin, and you will surely see beneath the veil of the normal world to the truth of magic and enchantment that hides within it.
