What is the difference between Elves and Druids?

We are all weaving our way through the mystical and magical realms of Nature and it is better for all of us if we do this as harmoniously as we can."

     Elves and Elfae of various sorts can be Druids as can Men and various other kinds of beings. Druidry is really a form of education. This question of the difference in elves and druids is rather like asking what is the difference between Black people, White people, Asian people and those individuals who have PhDs. Well, anyone with the sufficient qualifications and enough money (which is a lot) to pay for going to college can get a PhD. in whatever. While some races may have a tendency to get PhDs. more in one area than another (we don't actually know if this is true, we are just putting forward the possibility) there is nothing about race that disqualifies one from getting a PhD. (except social conditions, prejudice and economic inequality) or, therefore, from a person having a PhD. being of this, that or some other race.  Druidism was sort of the educational system of the Celtic ancients, which deeply involved spiritual and natural knowledge, as well as those things one might study in modern education. Druids seem to be a combination of Naturalists, Healers (Medical Practitioners), Astrologers (Astronomers), Priests, Poets, and Wizards all rolled into one and much more. This is also true of Elfae people. We can be all of those things, although most of us who are Elven are unlikely to be Priests. But then if you translated Priest as Shaman and Caretaker of the Spirit and Soul, then, yes, that too.

     In fact, years ago, we Silver Elves had a young witch come to us for spiritual counseling who wanted to start teaching what she knew of witchcraft, which we encouraged her to do. However, when we ask her what her spiritual race might be, Elf, Faerie, Pixie, etc. she insisted that she was of Witch-kind. We pointed out the sort of difference that we just outlined above between being an Elf and being a Druid as being also the difference between being an Elf and a Witch. But she, insisted that for her, being a Witch was the equivalent of being an Elf or Faerie. So, how could we deny her? She has a right to define herself as she pleases and to her being a Witch was a spiritual race. As long as she didn't deny other people's right to be Elfae or other who do witchcraft, this seemed perfectly reasonable to us.

     So, if someone wanted to say that they were a Druid and being a Druid is their spiritual race, that they were of Druid-kind, we'd accept that as well, as long as they didn't deny other people's right to be Men who are also Druids or to be Pixies who are also Druids or whatever.

     Now, technically speaking, we Silver Elves, are not Druids. We like the Druids very much, or at least most of the ones we've known and encountered and we used to carry on a correspondence with Isaac Bonewits, the founder and Arch-Druid of Ár nDraíocht Féin who invited us to join his organization (see our book Eldafaryn). Alas, we Silver Elves are not very organization oriented and we politely declined but we did feel honored thereby.

     But we have studied many of the same things as the modern and ancient Druids (see our book An Elfin Book of Trees for the Elven Druid: The Ogham of the Elves Using Elvish Wizard Script), although, for the most part we have our own system of education, which we call 'Play.' It is based upon the same principles as the ones that small children use for learning but whether one wishes to believe that we learned this from children or that, being forever childlike, we just do this naturally as children do, is up to the individual.

     Nicholas de Vere in his book The Dragon Legacy wrote that Druids or the Druidhe had a strong connection to the Elven race. He even seemed to express the opinion that the Druids arose out of Elven society. Whether this is true or not, we do not know, although he made a strong case for his assumption. But then, as much as we love de Vere's book, we are rather inclined to take what he writes with at least several grains of salt.

     Still, whatever the origins of Druidry, there is nothing to the Elven mind that prevents us from being Druids if we so desire or from Druids being Elfae, which they often are in our experience.
