What is the Magical Significance of 'Affect' in Elfin Enchantment Magic?

". . . enchantment, by its very nature, is a magic that is dependent upon the arousal of affect (feeling). This magic, naturally, is beneficial to both the magic wielder and the one effected by our enchantments for the enchanter experiences the ecstatic feeling and the other senses it and is moved by it, in that way sharing in the ecstasy that we feel. For otherwise, our magic is marked by anhedonia, or an inability to experience pleasure in our workings. . . . So, beloved elfae kindred ours, embrace your joy and channel it toward your magic. Let your magic excite your feelings while keeping your mind calm and steady, if not mostly silent and serene, which is to say focused, and let your affect touch the world and infect it with love, laughter and the enchantments of Elfin."

Affect is a word that means to move, change or cause effects. But it also means to touch someone emotionally or move them in a feeling way. In psychology, to say a person is lacking in affect means they have no feeling or emotional reaction. In other words, they act and feel "flat" or dead inside. To have low affect is to have very little feeling response, which means that almost nothing excites or stirs one, and one is essentially robotic as a responsive being.

Magic is a practice of causing change, which is to say creating specific effects by virtue of our will and intent focused through spells, chants, rituals and so forth. Magic by its very nature is an 'affective' process. Magic is the 'affect' that causes the effect or the result and fulfillment of one's will.

Focus is often said to be important to actualizing one's magic, which is to say making it effective. This is one of the themes of Madeline Miller's novel Circe. But affect or feeling is also frequently associated with making one's magic work, as well as with activating intuitive, psychic 'super', otherworldly and eldritch powers. We can see this frequently in shows where the individual can't seem to arouse their particular gift or power until they get angry by being endangered or provoked in some way and then their power suddenly manifests. Affect is the fuel of magic. Magic, while it can be viewed as a mere intellectual exercise, as science is generally seen as being, is not just a performance of technique or a rote carrying out of actions based upon a formula of some sort. That may be alright for chemistry. In fact, it may be advisedly so, or for automechanics, but magic is not just a science it is also and primarily an art. And for art, affect or feeling is greatly advised both in its expression and as it resonates with its viewer. The goal of art is affect, as is the goal and purpose of magic.

The Wilhelm/Baynes translation of the I Ching states that we cannot affect others if we are not open to being affected ours'elves. Magic is a relationship between us, Nature, the Universe and all who are around us. Without that relationship we cannot affect anything. And while the relationship can be merely physical, feeling brings a new, more subtle and deeper aspect to relationship. We go beyond the material plane into the astral planes of manifestation.

So, it is that shamans, ancient and modern, use chants, drumming and dance to arouse an ecstatic feeling within them. For anger is not the only means of arousing affect and, in the opinion of these elves, not the most effective means either. Anger drains one while ecstasy heals and empowers one. Anger can be controlled and channeled but to continually arouse anger within ones'elf is not, as far as we Silver Elves are concerned, the best of ideas. Whereas, arousing the ecstatic feeling is nearly always a good idea.

Of course, there are those who will attempt to 'fake' affect, just as there are those who attempt to pretend to be angry or otherwise be affected by someone with which they are in a personal relationship in order to manipulate others. However, while this may work and some folks may be fooled, true affect is much more powerful and its effects are far reaching. Actors, of course, are in the business of mimicking affect and if they are good actors they do this very well. But, even then, true affect is far more powerful.

The magic of the elves, of course, and elfae folk overall, as legend and lore tell us, is enchantment (see our book The Keys to Elfin Enchantment: Mastery of the Faerie Light Through the Portals of Manifestation). And enchantment, by its very nature, is a magic that is dependent upon the arousal of affect.

And even science, which can seem an exclusively mental affair, is best when the scientist is excited by their research and inquiries into Nature and its workings. The best scientists are ever those who are thrilled by the prospect and reality of discovery. And it is this thrill of learning and the possibility of the discovery of the Great and Secret Knowledge (see the novel Piranesi by Susanna Clark) that attracts most scientists to their profession.

Affect, in a sense, is life. Without it one feels dead and in the minds of most people one might as well be so without affect. This is why so many individuals who are experiencing schizophrenia go off their meds. For their meds usually make them feel dull and lifeless. And while schizophrenia can launch them into uncontrolled journeys into the netherworlds, ripping away the veil that protects most individuals from seeing that greater reality, they, at least, feel alive in their madness.

So, beloved elfae kindred ours, embrace your joy and channel it toward your magic. Let your magic excite your feelings while keeping your mind calm and steady, if not mostly silent and serene, which is to say focused, and let your affect touch the world and infect it with love, laughter and the enchantments of Elfin.

A note about which of The Silver Elves books to begin reading first. . . . .

Many people ask us which Silver Elves books to begin reading first and so we say, which ever sounds right to you, follow your elven intuition, as there is really no right order in which to read them (you may view all 60 of these on our author Amazon page here for the USA and here for UK)! But if you would like a suggestion, you may wish to begin with one or more of these books listed below:1. Through The Mists Of Faerie: A Magical Guide to the Wisdom Teachings of the Ancient Elven This is our most popular book and one we highly recommend reading by anyone interested in elves and the elven way.
2. The Elven Way: The Magical Path of the Shining Ones This is a companion book to Through the Mists of Faerie, but may be read in any order. It is also a very popular book and a good one to start with.
3. The Book of Elven Runes: A Passage Into Faerie We invite you to join our Silver Elves Youtube Channel where we occasionally make an elfin video! Here is one we made today in which we talk about Norse Runes and our own original Elven Rune set and The Book of Elven Runes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kAtuMRiMgo&t=7s
4. The Book of Elven Magick, The Philosophy and Enchantments of the Seelie Elves, volume 1, explores the Elven viewpoint concerning magick and the world, and traditional spiritual and religious myths. It covers all the color magicks, the tools of magic, and gives magical ceremonies that may be adapted for use by modern elves, magicians, and faerie folk. The Book of Elven Magick, The Philosophy and Enchantments ofthe Seelie Elves, Volume 2, continues the progression of the color magicks and proceeds on into the nature and establishment of the Elven Vortex/Coven, using mudras and tattoos in magic, using mantras in magic, our theories on calling the directions/dimensions, magical words of power, and much more. It is the completion of and companion to volume 1.

What is Elven Magic?

"Elven Magic traditionally, both in reality and fiction, Fairy Tales and Faerie Lore,
has associated the elves with the form of magic called enchantment."

Magic is generally defined as the application of one’s will to create various effects or achieve one’s intentions. And surely Elven Magic would adhere to this definition as well. However, Elven Magic traditionally, both in reality and fiction, Fairy Tales and Faerie Lore, has associated the elves with the form of magic called enchantment (see The Keys to Elfin Enchantment for more on this most elven art).
Enchantment seeks to fulfill its will especially through the enchanting or charming of the Universe and the individuals we desire to influence. It is not so much about compelling them to submit to our will but rather charming them into willingly fulfilling our desired intentions because they find us intriguing and wondrous and feel themselves benefited and fulfilled in aiding us and giving us what we desire. They seek to please us because we have inspired and pleased them, filled them with joy and helped bring meaning and purpose into their lives.
Thus elven enchantment depends a great deal upon the maturity and development of the individual’s spirit, soul and personality. Most forms of magic, while certainly being benefited by having a mature magician performing the art, don’t actually require the magician to have a good spirit, a decent soul and especially not a pleasing personality. A strong spirit is certainly a great help but no soulfulness or very little is required from most magicians and they can have, as fiction informs us and as history attests, the most noxious, nefarious or downright cantankerous personalities. Elves, however, to truly develop our powers of enchantment need to awaken the divine within ours’elves for there is nothing more attractive to man, beast or spirit than the ecstatic nature of the Divine Magic.

"Enchantment dances,
Enchantment sings,
Enchantment gives the faeries wings!"

"Enchantment is the subtlest of magics that flaunts itself while remaining practically invisible and exudes great power while using no force whatsoever."
— from Elf Quotes by The Silver Elves

If you are further interested in our magic philosophy and rituals, we suggest that you visit our website and read sample pages and the table of contents of our two volumes (also both available on Amazon) of The Book of Elven Magick: The Philosophy and Enchantments of the Seelie Elves (volume 1) and here you will find volume 2. In these two books we explore the Elven viewpoint concerning magick and the tools of magic with magical ceremonies that may be adapted for use by modern faerie folk. The two volumes give the complete progression of color magicks and also explore Elven Vortexes and Covens, as well as our theories on calling the directions and dimensions and more.

"This book, dear kin, and the others we have written are the magic signs we’ve left for those searching for Elfin/Faerie in and beyond the world. We bless you and grant your true wishes." —From the Book of Elven Magick, volume 2

The information on The Ten Stages, or Colors of Elven Ritual Magic below is taken from the The Book of Elven Magick: Vols 1 and 2, by The Silver Elves. We would like to thank Ileådryn, Sara Isayama, for her beautiful graphic design.
MagicStagesSilverElves
We Silver Elves created this Color Magic system as something fluid and individual. You start with what Color Magic you feel you are drawn to. If you don't have a preference and are a person who likes things set in order, then start with One. If you are a person who likes to go more by your feelings, then choose first the one you are attracted to and feel you meed in your life. It is said that if you like to look at this in terms of order, one might think of the color sequence above as being akin to something like Maslow's Heirarchy of Needs, only applied to magic and ritual. For instance, it's hard to do Healing Green Magic, if one is under psychic attack and therefore one must first defend oneself and place barriers and be in a secure, safe place before one can do any healing. That is why, for example, Black Magic or Protection Magic is placed before Healing Green Magic. Also, "Health" is a perhaps the greatest wealth, which is why Healing Magic comes before Orange Magic for wealth generation, and so forth.
But remember that we often are working on more than one color magic at a time in our lives just as we have more than one need at a time that needs fulfilling. So while you certainly may go in an order 1 to 10, what you need is truly your decision and you may need to do more than one at a time. We don't actually have charts or graphs in our books, most likely because the Elven Way is so fluid.

Also, we welcome you to come join us on Facebook under Zardoa's birth name Michael J. Love (silver elves) and Martha Char Love (Silver Flame).

"When elves first awaken to the realization of who they really are, there is often a euphoria that sets in but this enchantment only ever lasts for a short while and then grounded once more the individual is faced with the fact that magic, even elfin magic, requires effort and a decision to go on."
—The Silver Elves

Excerpt on an elven view of Magic and Science from page 115 of LIBER ÆLPH: Words of Guidance from the Silver Elves to our Magical Children by The Silver Elves

"The laws of Magic may seem irrational to some but they are often functioning on the principles of higher dimensions. Thus Faerie being closer to the Source, the Magic, is a more encompassing dimension and therefore its laws may at times supersede those of this mundane world. Alas, to utilize those laws, to set those powers in motion requires us as individuals, as spirits, as elves to access those dimensions within our own beings. To use Elfin magic in this world requires that we become ever more attuned to our true elfin natures. Our elfin magic, which seems impossible to most folks, is perfectly in keeping with the laws of Nature, only higher laws, more profound principles than most even imagine exist."

We also welcome you to come join us on Facebook under the name Michael J. Love (Zardoa of The SilverElves) and Martha Char Love (SilverFlame of The Silver Elves).

doth suddenly come clear."

Do Elves Do Ceremonial and Ritual Magic?

Do elves do ceremonial magick?

Well, we have. We’ve done and experimented with every form of sane magic that we’ve come across. Our The Book of Elven Magick, volume 1 and 2, suggest possibilities for doing ceremonial and ritual magic. But as is so often the case with these elves, we are only making suggestions in order to inspire our kindred to create their own rituals and ceremonies if that is their desire.
For our own part, we don’t really have any ceremonies that we perform. If called to do so we, of course, could whip one up at a moment’s notice, and we are certainly not against ceremony, we just don’t really have that many formal occasions to celebrate or mark with ceremony.
We have done magick in a magic circle, if you wish to call that ceremonial magick and we have evoked spirits into a magical triangle and we have observed the traditional rules concerning this art as we did so. Still most of what we did was still improvised on the spot. We are a very impromptu folk.
But we have also attended ceremonies that various pagan friends have conducted, as well as having attended Christian and other ceremonies. These include graduation ceremonies that we took part in, weddings, baptisms, etc. (In fact, years ago on a journey, a sort of Faerie Rade, though Arizona a young man that we encountered there asked Zardoa if he would baptize him and so Zardoa put together an impromptu baptism for him. We are rather all purpose elves.)
Yet, at the same time, while the magic we do tends to be ad hoc and on the fly most of the time, we can see the value in having ceremonies that have been rehearsed. While we have experience in improvisational theatre, we wouldn’t much care for it if every movie we watched was un-rehearsed and improvised. We can see the importance and power in a certain amount of preparation and if we were dealing with a large crowd/audience we’d probably rehearse our performance in order to give it the most impact and dramatic flair. But since these elves are generally doing magic unseen in the world, the only thing that really matters is that we do it as sincerely and effective as we are able.
The following is one of our Silver Elves sayings that we chant in our magic for happiness, prosperity and good luck in general.

Do elves do ritual magic?

First, let us say that many people use the terms ceremonial magick and ritual magick as interchangeable and we don’t object to them doing so, we have probably done so our own s’elves. But if we wish to be a bit technical about it, ceremonial magick probably has more to do with a ceremony, which is to say marking a special event or occasion, as say the ceremony when a king or queen is crowned or a president sworn in, or even a graduation ceremony.
Ritual, on the other hand, bears the idea of something that is repeated and probably on a regular basis, almost a habit. In that way the Catholic mass may sometimes be called a ceremony, because it is celebrating the miraculous life and death and rebirth of Christ, but really is in most cases a ritual that is repeated on a weekly basis at the very least. This is not to say that the Catholic Church doesn’t have ceremonies, as for instance when a new pope is installed, or a priest raised up to be a bishop or cardinal, or a nun or a priest takes their vows. But the every Sunday mass really is more in the form of a ritual than a ceremony. But it is easy to see how these two terms have become somewhat interchangeable.
We elves probably do more ritual magick than ceremonial magick but in saying that it might be important to point out that when we say we do ritual magic we don’t necessarily mean we are evoking spirits in a magic circle. Our ritual magick is not usually combined with ceremony in a uniform fashion, for as we previously explained our ceremonies are more impromptu and follow little traditions like the ones you may have already experienced in many Pagan ceremonies. For instance, we surely may call the spirits in a magic circle, but not as a ritual in the same way calling the same spirits from the same directions year after year for a particular ceremony. We would be more likely to consult the elven oracles (perhaps using The Elfin Book of Spirits or The Elements of Elven Magic) to find the spirits that need to join us for that particular day and magical occasion.
Rather than rituals in ceremonies, we have certain daily rituals we tend to do, like having tea and toast or home baked gingerbread for breakfast each day, or doing the dishes, and in doing these rituals we often turn them into a bit of magic. And, frankly when we say we have breakfast each day, it is good to understand that we generally get up somewhere between 10:30 a.m. and Noon, and have ‘breakfast’ at around 1:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. We’re not sure that still counts as breakfast in some people’s minds, but it is when we usually break our fast. And we have other little magics we do most days, (this routine being altered at times when we are off adventuring), sending blessings out into the world to our kindred and doing what we can to help, heal and awaken our kin. These are also little bits of ritual magic, but very informally done, simply somewhat repetitive in nature, although open to change and modification at any time we think of some way to do what we are doing better and more effectively. We also often enjoy painting our magical sigils on rocks and leaving them during our travels in various places around the world, during which we give our elven blessings. Both the artistic creative process of making the rocks and the elven blessings we give while placing them are an elven ritual for us and something we love to do over and over, yet each time it is quite different for each location requires a different healing energy.
So, yes, these elves do ritual magic, but with the same formality that we do the dishes (which is to say, often but quite informally and as efficiently as possible) and the same attention to detail and love that we give to preparing our meals.

If you are further interested in our magic philosophy and rituals, we suggest that you visit our website and read sample pages and the table of contents of our two volumes (also both available on Amazon) of The Book of Elven Magick: The Philosophy and Enchantments of the Seelie Elves.
