Are we Elves a cruel mockery of Tolkien’s perfection? And did some Elves migrate down into caves and over time become the Dark Elves?

Are we Elves a cruel mockery of Tolkien’s perfection? This is a question that arose from a comment in our Silver Elves Facebook groups. Among the things the person mentioned were surgically pointed ears, the fact that we are not ageless or immortal, we don’t have the grace of Illuvatar and we don’t have far seeing eyes. 

     Tolkien himself indicated that orcs were created from tortured Elves and were a cruel mockery of Tolkien’s idea of perfection for we elves. In that case, if you go by this person’s point of view, we’d be orcs. Although, we think we’d be somewhat advanced orcs. Orcs that have evolved. And since orcs, according to Tolkien’s own lore, were formed from elves, we’d be elves who are just not as perfected and refined as his fictional elves or ideal elves, we might say. It is hard to live up to people’s imaginations and expectations of ones'Elf.

     While we elves are not as powerful, as lovely in most cases, or as refined as Tolkien’s idea of we elven, we do have the advantage of being real. We are actual elves. Not fictional elves, except sometimes in our own imaginings. We are living, breathing elves that have manifest in the world and are evolving through our own efforts to refine and perfect ours’elves. Developing our beings as best we may as much as we are able.

     Most of us don’t have biologically pointed ears, it is true. Although, we’ve known some of our kindred who did. But then, the idea that we elves have pointed ears is a later development created by writers and artists to distinguish us from men (mankind) and isn’t necessarily an actual aspect of elven being. Still, as we’ve said previously, most of us modern manifest elves do love pointed ears so much that we wear prosthetic elf ears just as some people wear false eyelashes, false fingernails and even high heels. And yes, some of us elven folk love pointed ears so much that they have their ears surgically altered. Ultimately, while it is more expensive than prosthetic elf ears, it is a lot more convenient. 

     And no, we are not ageless or near immortal but quite a few of us do tend to appear younger longer and experience some longevity beyond that of the folk around us that call themselves normal. That surely has something to do with the fact that we who are elven also often have better diets and sometimes exercise more than those other folks. But also, in the long run, we tend to be happier being elves and experience less stress in our lives. Not that there is no stress in our lives but we are inclined to stress less about things. Being elves is a delightful way to be and makes us happy and that, in and of itself, is a healthy way to experience life.

     And no, once more, we don’t have far seeing eyes. Or, at least, most of us don’t. Although, for us Silver Elves cataract surgery has improved our eyesight greatly. Or is that a no-no, like surgical elf ears? We have surgical elf eyes. More or less.

     But when it comes to saying we don’t experience the grace of Illuvatar, that’s going too far. Of course, Illuvatar is Tolkien’s creation, although as far as we elves are concerned, he is just as valid of a deity as all the other deities that people believe in, who are all made up anyway (if you can get ahold of it, see The Spiritual Tolkien Milieu: A Study Of Fiction-Based Religion by Markus Altena Davidsen). All deities are somebody’s creation. We elves, for the most part, are non-religious folk, although we do believe in the Divine Magic, which is the underlying magic and energy that exists in all things and beings. To say we don’t have the grace of Illuvatar, or the Divine Magic as we’d call it, is presuming too much. The Divine Magic lives in potential in all of creation and, while it is up to us to realize it, no one is barred from doing so. We may not be as perfect in reality as Tolkien’s fictional elves are in some people’s imaginations, but we are still made of star-stuff and will in time perfect ours’elves even more. Whether we will be exactly like Tolkien’s elves when we have evolved, we do not know precisely but we shall surely be greater than we currently are and potentially greater than what Tolkien wrote about us. 

     In a certain way, we manifest elves are like little children. No, we haven’t the powers and education of more mature elves or "adults" (a term we don’t like to use) at this point but in time we will grow and change and that, in its way, is inevitable. In the gentle time, we shall do our best to be the best elves we can be and if that doesn’t suit the imaginations of some folks, we expect that they weren’t really elves in the first place and didn’t really know what they were talking about. What it means to be elfin and what makes one an elf is the province of we elven, after all. 




 Did some Elves migrate down into caves and over time become the Dark Elves?


     There is an idea about the origin of the dark elven folk that can be found in some Norse Lore and that is that some of us elven migrated down into caves and over time developed or transformed into dark elves. It is important to understand that the Norse categorized we elven primarily into Dökkálfar meaning Dark Elves and Ljósálfar indicating Light Elves. However, in the Prose Edda one can also find mention of the Svartálfar or Black Elves, which may or may not mean the same people that are referred to as Dökkálfar or Dark Elves.

     Of course, as we’ve pointed out previously in many of our The Silver Elves books, Dark Elves (especially in modern times) also often associate thems’elves with Unseelie fae. The Unseelie fae are those elfae folk who, overall, are more hostile toward mankind and who often don’t see thems’elves as being ‘human’. Although, as we’ve indicated numerous times, their definition of ‘human’ is derived from fiction and not from a scientific understanding of what constitutes being human. If you associate the word human with humane, we elfae folk, even the Unseelie, are often more human or humane than many other folk who call themselves normal. 

     Dökkálfar and Svartálfar are both commonly associated with Drow of modern faerie lore who have black skin (thus perhaps Svartálfar) and who live in caves and caverns. This idea of caves and caverns, of course, also naturally links them to dwarves, and surely many of the Norse saw the dark elves as being dwarves. However, in modern times there has developed a distinct differentiation between dwarves and dark elves/drow. They, like humanity over all, may have come from a common ancestor, but as peoples they have been individuating for some time and developing distinctive features of their own. 

     The problem with this is, in part, that while Drow are generally illustrated as having black skin, although often white hair, it is the sun that tends to tan a person and it is a lack of sunlight that seems to lighten our features. Since that is the case, the notion that cavern dwelling dark elves or drow would have black skin seems unlikely. Especially if they didn’t have dark skin to begin with, which is to say, before dwelling in caves on a somewhat permanent basis. Those elves, we might call Sun Elves, who spend a lot of time in tropical regions with stronger sun exposure are much more likely to develop deeply tanned or blackened skin (see the Sun Elves of the Elfquest comic series and our recently published The Silver Elves book titled SUN ELVES: Their Customs and Their Magic).

     Of course, it is not just a matter of being exposed to sunlight or a lack thereof, except over a great deal of time. There are genetic factors involved that would affect the amount of melanin in a person’s genetic makeup as well as other ‘racial’ characteristics. Thus, even if the dark or black elves entered the caverns with dark skin tones, it is unlikely that overtime their skin would become darker from dwelling there.

     However, their eyes would become used to the dark and if they came out in the full light of day would probably find it blinding and therefore, if they did come out, would probably be more inclined to do so at evening or night. In that way, we might think that dark elves or black elves are, in fact, those elves who are more attuned to night and shadows. Dark, in that case, not referring to their skin color but their habit of living in the dark. Whereas, Svartálfar or Black Elves may refer to skin color and there is no reason really that Black Elves could not also be Dark Elves.

     Since Dark Elves, at least in Norse lore, are sometimes associated with dwarves as well as with caves and caverns, we expect that we might also link them to forges since the dwarves are noted for their abilities as blacksmiths. Blacksmiths used black coal to heat their forges and this, inevitably would tend to coat them in coal dust as well as being affected by the smoke and soot from the forge. They would appear to be black, at least temporarily, because of that and this may also account for the notion that in going into the caverns and becoming smiths, like dwarves, that elves became dark elves. 

     We Silver Elves don’t have a set opinion upon this matter, except for the fact that migrating to caves is unlikely to make a person’s skin tone darker; however, it would, as we say, accustom one to the dark and thus, we expect that is the development of dark elves. And if we add the notion that some elves migrated into caverns to flee the aggressive encroachments of mankind upon their homelands, then that would also account for their hostile attitude toward men overall.

"What most people call consciousness is an awareness of their thoughts, beliefs and ideas. In the animal kingdom, consciousness is an instinctual awareness and lacks, for the most part, the beliefs, ideas and self-concepts found among humans. In the human being, the idea driven consciousness comes to fore but, as we’ve pointed out already, this is primarily directed and motivated by ideas ruled by our passions and emotionally connected ideas. We think ours’elves to be free but really our lives are controlled by these passions and beliefs.

When we are born into a particular life we come bearing the imprint on our souls of our previous experiences. Obviously, when we are reborn we don’t have the same body. So our bodies, as they currently exist, clearly are not a part of our immortal s’elf, although they are composed of the energy that is, in its’elf, immortal. We are mostly formed from Star-stuff or Stardust, and elves are particularly aware of this fact. So when we come into a new life, our soul/spirit gathers around it the available stardust/energy to form a new body.

Since this stardust also bears the imprint of its past, in the form of a DNA coding directive, we also come into each life with a racial consciousness, formed in what is often called the Collective Unconscious. We also have a human consciousness, and bear the imprint of our evolution through various forms from all our previous incarnations. To become truly immortal beings, that is to say, immortal in the way that vampires are seen as being immortal, having a permanent immortal physical body, we need to integrate our consciousness with and merge with the consciousness of the energy that temporarily composes us. Of course, elves are often also seen as being Immortal, particularly in our more ephemeral forms, or our ethereal or etheric bodies combined with our astral bodies.

In time our bodies will become more resilient, less physical, and more like light, thus more ephemeral. The dimensions we will reside within, the dimension of Elfin/Faerie will be similar to living in a dream. We will have greater powers, such as the power to fly, and the ability to do things that we can now only dream of doing. And yet it will be every bit as real as a dream seems when we are in it, or every bit as real as this illusionary world that we currently abide within.
Also, just as clearly when we pass from one body to another, we don’t carry our thoughts, feelings and beliefs with us, or our memories, unless indeed we have obtained continuity of consciousness and have born our mind through the death process, which, honestly, these particular elves are nowhere near to achieving. Are you? If you are, you will be able to tell because you will be able to remain aware throughout the night as your body sleeps without losing consciousness. Sleep, as we said, is the little death. It is the reflection in microcosm, As Above/So Below, As Within/So Without, of the life death cycle.

For most individuals, the death experience and the assumption of a new stardust body is like suffering from total amnesia. You don’t remember anything. You don’t even know what you know. For instance, in amnesia, you may know how to type or play a piano, but don’t you know that you know how to do it until you sit down at a typewriter, or computer, or piano and suddenly find that typing or playing piano comes automatically to you. So, too, in moving from one life to another, we carry certain abilities with us. We don’t necessarily know that we know, rather we feel we were born with certain talents and abilities, and indeed we were. Usually, we find we learn these things very quickly and easily. These skills seem to come naturally to us.

Our feelings, not so much our emotions, but mostly our feelings, because they are by their nature essentially unconscious, come easily through the transitional state of death. We may not remember whom we loved or liked or disliked, but if we encounter them again or someone like them we immediately sense our attraction, or our repulsion. There are certain individuals that we know immediately even though it seems we have never met them previously. So until we are able to carry our memories from life to life consciously, they are still born in our soul, particularly those things that are most important to us, which is love and relationship, as well as having an instinctual recognition of and attraction to those with whom we have a karmic connection either positive or negative.

We can see this fact reflected in our current life in our conscious and unconscious. The basic consciousness is everything of which we are currently aware. But we also have an unconscious which composes everything of which we are not aware, which for most of us is far vaster than our conscious awareness. Consider all the things we don’t know, and add to it all the things, events, facts, people, experiences we have forgotten, which are stored in our brains but which, for most of them, are lost to us except at certain times. So, too, are our experiences stored in our soul, but only accessible under certain profound circumstances, although occasionally brought to mind by our encounters in the world, just as memories may be brought back into consciousness by a particular, song, smell, or experience. Our soul stores all our experiences and in that way is linked to the Akashic record, which records all experiences of all beings. The Akashic record is the library of the Soul of the Universe."

STAR ELVES: Their Customs and Their Magic is all about star elves and by the term Star Elves, we mean elves who have a sense or feeling of having come from the stars. This relationship we feel to the stars may indicate a memory of our ethereal lives before we came to the Earth to manifest in material bodies rather than necessarily having had material bodies out among the stars. In our star lives, we were closer to the ‘star stuff’ we are all composed of and which has now ‘solidified’ into a relatively set form due to gravity. We Silver Elves say that we are the Elves of Starlight, Moonlight and the Radiance of the Forest, and therefore in a way we are Star Elves, Moon Elves and Wood Elves.      In reading WOOD ELVES: The Customs and Magic of the Sylvan Folk, you will find discussed 180 various wood elf tribes (a chapter is devoted to each) of which there are numerous member clans and also often families of various clans. Many of the tribes have multiple clans; for instance, the Hackberry tree related tribe called the Lotåcani has nearly 70 clans (and there are many tree tribes with even more clans). So, while we include the name of the tree or shrub, along with the tree tribe name and about its elven life, appearance, history, clan relationships and magic, we are unable to elaborate upon many of the clans for it would make this tome far too vast. However, the tribes and clans that we do illuminate are those who are best known among us. In Faerie and Elfin, diversity is a way of life. Nature loves diversity and so does the Divine Magic that created it all. And Faerie is ever evolving. New clans or tribes can pop up while others may disappear.
